‘Trigger’ - Giant Synapse’ 2002 The Giant Synapse in the brain is a horseshoe like structure, studied by Neurosciences as it is the largest synapse in the brain. This shape is formed because thousands of individual synapses have culminated together to process information concerning the auditory loop (hearing). The central image shows this structure, true to the original Confocal laser Microscope image, whilst the composition itself allows you to travel with the sound waves (white lines and red spots) entering the Synapse then into the moment of synaptic transmission to 10,0000 other neurons. |

‘Ode to Dendrite’ (Synaptic Transmission, the Brain) 2001-03 This painting and ‘Kaleidoscope of the brain’ (below) are a result of researching Neuroscience with scientists. They capture a moment in the brain when the synaptic transmission occurs, the dendrites(the root like structure) release chemicals which are diffused through the cell membrane. It’s this process that allows memory and function in the brain. As this event happens it signals to 10,000 other neurons. This moment is not visually accessible in this science, although the synapse with dendrite structure is true to the confocal laser microscope image. The paintings are put together from research of the concept and a wish to recreate a fascinating and complex moment in the brain, of what is occurring in order for us to Think, Remember and Do. |

‘Kaleidoscope of the brain’ 2001-04 The Synapse is the root like structure in a Neuron in the Brain and the Dendrites are at the tip of these where all the chemicals are released to 10,00 other cells, in order for the Brain to relay messages, ordering action, and memory to take place. This picture portrays that moment of thought and consequent Brain activity. |

‘Every Memory, Everywhere 1’ 2003-05 This body of work has progressed from the Neuroscience research, which investigated memory storage and brain function. It enquires into more personal memories, specifically in relation to past generations. It reconstructs matter, and textures that set off a memory stored in the brain, whilst relating it to possibilities of continued life existence, and a shared memory of a grander scale. The two yellow figures in 1 are the artists Grandma and Grandad taken from a photograph. |

‘Rose-moment of physicality’ 2007 oil on canvas 152 x 112cm The original rose was analysed in the artist's forensic investigation "My Sitting Room" 2002. This investigation led the artist to search for items that reflected her identity and personal memories through kept mementos and ordinary household items. The rose bush from where the original rose was cut and given in love was located and a fresh rose cut and painted live. The original analysed microscopic visual data from under the laser microscope has been reconstructed. This work on paper portrays the real rose its microscopic structure, molecule state and atomic level all being pushed into the moment of physicality. |
